WHAT IS AN AUDIT SEMI SENIOR?

What is an Audit Semi Senior?

Audit Semi Senior Maggie, on joining the profession, career fulfilment and her aspirations for the future.

We are currently seeking an Audit Semi Senior to join our team. Maggie joined us in the role in November 2022, just over six months into her time with Parsons, she recalls her first impressions:

“The culture and growth of the firm stood out initially, it’s important to me be part of a team of like-minded colleagues with the drive to collaborate for the firm and its clients.
“Working in a client-facing role with opportunities to visit client sites was high on my list of priorities and this job certainly delivers. I get direct exposure to clients’ plans, aims and challenges – and I can see the real-life impact of the work we do. A dream client would be in the equine sector, and I especially love those with dogs on-site!”

Audit Semi Senior: A varied and client-facing role in the finance profession

Our Audit Semi Seniors enjoy a varied role which gives them experience of leading the audit process from the planning stage, right through to completion. They have the opportunity to supervise and coach more junior team members and to work closely with a diverse set of clients. Maggie explains some of the skills required for the job;

“Communication is a massive part of my job because good client and colleague relationships are key. I also need to be incredibly organised to work across different jobs at the same time, keeping track of what I’m doing and what’s coming up for each client.

“Probably a more challenging aspect of the role is keeping on top of the actions for which we need the client to be accountable, maintaining a clear list of priorities for them and keeping things moving to meet hard deadlines.

“Every client is different, they all have slight differences in how they prefer to work with us so we need to be adaptable – no two days are the same.”

Since April 2021, the team has grown to eight people serving clients including an international group of companies operating in the food industry with revenues of £350m. The team was nominated for the Audit Service award at the 2023 Yorkshire Accountancy Awards.

Career progression

A smiling female Audit Semi Senior stands beside a screen in a school classroom.

During her first six months, Maggie had an opportunity to visit a local school to present to students, promoting the audit and accounting profession and sharing her career journey with aspiring finance professionals. She says;

“It’s great to be involved with supporting the next generation of accountants and auditors by answering their questions, exploring what they could achieve and how they can enter into this fulfilling profession.

“My own journey was inspired by my search for an apprenticeship that would suit my skills and aspirations. The accountancy apprenticeship spoke to my love for numbers and analysis and placed me into a client-facing role. I could meet key client contacts and visit their sites whilst putting theoretical learning into practice alongside colleagues who gave me the benefit of their many years of experience.

“I completed my level 7 apprenticeship straight from A Levels and joined a global firm for two years before moving to Parsons where I’ve stepped up from associate to semi senior. I aim to get qualified and become chartered, whilst continuing to grow my portfolio of clients.”

The Parsons team

We’re proud to report that Maggie also loves working in our team at Parsons. She says:

“This is a really fun place to work with opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. I feel challenged in my role and there’s time and encouragement to learn and broaden my skills. The team is friendly and supportive with a social committee and Business For Good program which deliver regular fun and opportunities to get involved in fundraising and community projects. I wouldn’t complain about the endless supply of chocolate and biscuits in our office either!”

Maggie was Star Baker in our Coronation Bake Off for Macmillan Cancer Support (pictured above), and she will join our team to run the Leeds Clarion 10K Team Challenge next month – also for Macmillan. Find out more about our Business For Good Program.
